Steam trade hold and trade ban: why a skin is not delivered
2 min read
If a withdrawal says that Steam holds your trades for several days, the reason is your Steam account’s settings, not the site. Here is what a trade hold is, why it stops skins from being delivered and how to remove it.
1.What is a Steam trade hold?
A trade hold is Steam’s protection against stolen accounts. If your account has not had the Steam Guard mobile authenticator for at least 7 days, Steam does not deliver items in a trade at once: it holds them for up to 15 days, and the trade can still be cancelled during that time.
Steam names the length of the hold itself. It is not set by the site and the site cannot shorten it.
2.Why a withdrawal is not delivered during a hold
A skin is withdrawn by a trade offer from the market that sells it. Markets do not send trades that Steam would hold for days, so while your account is on hold the skin cannot reach you.
That is why DOTAGRADE asks Steam about your account before buying a copy for you. If your trades are on hold, you see how many days Steam named, and the item stays in your inventory on the site — nothing is lost. You can keep it, sell it for balance or use it in an upgrade, and withdraw it once the hold is gone.
3.How to remove the trade hold
- Install the Steam mobile app and turn on the Steam Guard mobile authenticator in it.
- Wait 7 days: after that Steam stops holding your trades.
- Withdraw the item again.
If you have just switched the authenticator on, the hold does not disappear at once — the 7 days count from that moment. Removing the authenticator starts the hold again.
4.Other Steam trade restrictions
Steam can also limit trading for some days after changes to the account’s security, for example after a password reset or a new Steam Guard setup. Steam shows the date until which your trades are limited on its trade offers page.
A trade ban is a different thing: Steam blocks trading on the account entirely, and it is not lifted by waiting a few days. An account with a trade ban cannot receive withdrawals; the items on the site can still be sold for balance or used in upgrades.
5.Checklist before a withdrawal
- The trade link of your own account is saved in “Profile → Settings” — see Your Steam trade link.
- The Steam Guard mobile authenticator has been on for at least 7 days.
- Your Steam inventory is public and has free space.
- There is no trade ban on the account.
